after many years i returned to Pondicherry
to visit our indigo dyer and spend a little time enjoying
this pretty French city on the sea
i found this photo today of my first Auntie Oti studio
it was wedged between my closet and bedroom,
with a nice view on the back yard
i made phone calls, answered emails, wrote invoices
and printed shipping labels up here
downstairs i would pack orders either in the living room
(sitting in a rocking chair) or in the kitchen
that is also where i would see customers
all the stock was in the basement
we washed everything in the laundry room next to the kitchen sink
it was a crush, but looking back at this photo,
how sweet and simple it seems
